Greenwich Project: Greenwich Country Day School: Precision Engineering for a Track and Field

At first glance, a track and field looks simple. A flat oval. Open space. Clean lines.

In reality, delivering a quarter-mile track within a constrained campus setting requires significant precision, grading control, and regulatory coordination.

At Greenwich Country Day School’s Stanwich Road campus, Redniss & Mead helped bring a donor-led vision to life under a compressed timeline and challenging site conditions.

A Donor Driven Initiative

Unlike many institutional projects, this effort began directly with a donor whose goal was clear and time sensitive. The school’s leadership and project team moved quickly to identify a feasible location and advance approvals.

Several earlier site options were evaluated and ultimately abandoned due to environmental limitations, grading complexity, and adjacency concerns. The final solution emerged at the former St Agnes parish campus, where open land provided the opportunity to construct a regulation quarter mile track and natural turf field.

From the outset, the schedule was ambitious.

Engineering a Flat Surface on a Sloped Site

A regulation track must be flat. The Stanwich Road property was not.

Creating the platform required substantial earthwork. In some corners of the site, grades were lowered significantly. In others, fill was added to balance elevations. Retaining walls reaching roughly fifteen feet in height were required in one area, while other corners demanded careful fill placement to achieve uniform performance.

The precision required for track construction left little margin for error.

Redniss & Mead led grading design and coordinated wetlands permitting to support this transformation, ensuring that earthwork balanced structural needs, drainage performance, and environmental compliance.

Designing for What Comes Next

Although the field is currently natural turf, the drainage infrastructure was designed to accommodate future conversion to synthetic turf.

In Greenwich, synthetic turf is treated as an impervious surface. That classification significantly increases stormwater design requirements. Rather than redesign the system later, Redniss & Mead engineered the drainage network to meet full impervious assumptions from the outset, including both the track and a potential synthetic field.

This approach protects the school from needing to disrupt their current facilities or reconstruct infrastructure when program needs evolve.

Delivering Under Schedule Pressure

Construction timing shifted due to contractor pricing and rebidding, ultimately pushing completion into less favorable seasons. Despite these shifts, the core engineering framework remained intact.

The result is a completed track and field facility that appears straightforward, yet rests on careful grading, wetlands coordination, and future ready stormwater design.
